Dive Bar: Sometimes Less Is More

I started working on Dive Bar back in July, originally making it, probably more complicated than it needed to be, with the Rhythm n Rawhide Choreography Competition in mind.

It's easy to get carried away when you're creating a dance. You start playing with steps, adding ideas and seeing how much you can fit into the music. But more isn't always better!

As I worked on Dive Bar, again in October I decided to strip it back and simplify the choreography. I wanted to make it easier to teach, more accessible for dancers and, most importantly, enjoyable to dance. And I still wanted to keep the 'sink turns' as part of the chorus.

It's been a good reminder that choreography isn't about how many complicated steps you can squeeze into a song. It's about finding the right movements for the music and creating something that people want to get up and dance.

Sometimes that means letting go of ideas you've spent time developing and going back to basics. The final dance might be simpler than the original version, but that doesn't mean less thought has gone into it.

Dive Bar is now a beginner-level dance, and I'm happy with the direction it took. After all, the best part of creating a dance is seeing people enjoy it on the floor.
