May was colour, confidence, and community all rolled into one. Our Rainbow Party was a so much fun and a riot of brightness, followed closely by one of the most memorable experiences yet – the International Flashmob on 3 May.
Picture this: line dancers up Marine Parade, then surprise routines in Clive Square at the Saturday markets. We danced to A Bar Song (Ben Murphy) and Do It All Again (Gary O’Reilly & Maggie Gallagher). The energy was unreal. And later, scrolling online to see clubs across NZ – and the world – doing the same dances? Goosebumps.
May was also the month I started teaching my first ever absolute beginners series – five weeks, forty-plus people squeezed into the shed. I was so nervous, but Bex jumped in with her usual no-fear attitude, and off we went.
By mid-month, we were road-tripping to Woodville for a social with the Ruahine Line Dancers crew – there were so many of us, like 100s of people, dancing together all in one hall. Then hanging with the locals at the Woodville Local... well that was an experience.
We rounded the month with dinner and line dancing at Jarks restaurant, where Annie and Emily worked their magic getting even the non-dancers up on the floor. And to top it all off, we launched Sunday beginner sessions at the Union Hotel. What a month!
Reflection:
Sometimes nerves are just excitement in disguise. Teaching that first class showed me that stepping up creates space for others to step in too.
